If a teacher is just starting to implement a video production class with 5th graders (15 of them), what advice would you give?

No way, I grew up in Arlington Heights and taught in Mt Prospect after teaching in Evanston for a few years before that.

I was at an El Ed school in a NW suburb of Chicago for 7 years and have moved on to a Middle School in a suburb of Milwaukee. I pretty much do the same thing and am pushing to create some sort of studio here. The HS does have a digital video class w/ about 30 grand of equipment in there.

I love doing podcasts/videos in iMovie/ and working w/ Blue/Green screens. For all Video needs I used Roscor and my contact is Greg Bayer and friend of mine. http://www.roscor.com/ They are the best around and ship worldwide. They are based out of Milwaukee and Chicago.

If you want more info in Wirecast let me know or email me on the side and I'll be happy to get into more details w/ you.

Thanks for your comments and that's great to hear about your use w/ Final Cut. I created a TV studio at my old district. It was a 2 room setup where one room was the studio, wired through the ceiling to the room across the hall that was the control room. We had professional lighting, wired/wireless mics, shotgun mounted in the ceiling, and everything wired into a sound mixer and Mac G5 Xenon Quad computer, running Wirecast. Wirecast is my all time favorite app for video. http://www.telestream.net/wire-cast/overview.htm

Also, you can view my studio info here http://www.telestream.net/wire-cast/overview.htm and the sketches here http://lions.dist57.org/faculty/faculty/kapuler/studio-grant/drawings

Thanks for taking time to tell me how you're sharing our sharing , Paul. Makes me happy to read about it!!

I found what I think is a very interesting site today called zimmertwins.com... You probably already know about it, but in case you don't, it made me think about your work...

The site is made for kids, but I can see just how much I can learn there about how to THINK like a videographer... looking forward to playing with it.

I'd love to hear what you think about a widget like that, as an educator...

I got a copy of Vegas Platinum today... so now I'll start working with a real program... and see if I'm not just totally overwhelmed with all the possibilities...

I love learning new things...and with carpel tunnel and arthritis starting to claim my hands, I'm also humble about how much I'll be able to do with video editing... We'll see...

Your friendship here and encouragement mean a lot.

Yes, Paul. Life is great!! And I'm crazy about this group and really appreciate the time you took to make your extended comments. It's wonderful to hear that the kids were enlivened by getting my response ... and I want to be sure to see their next efforts. I'm passing links to your work to other teachers and friends who are lifelong learners...and every time people are weepy with happiness seeing how fully engaged your group is in their own inquiries.

I want to pass the links on to my friend and former client, Karen Quebe, who is community outreach coordinator for KLRU-TV in Austin, TX, where I lived until I moved up here to Oregon last year. She would just LOVE what you're doing... as would her colleagues. I did a bunch of organizational development work with KLRU before I moved from Austin and I still carry that whole staff around in my heart. If it would be helpful to you for me to connect you with any of those folks, please let me know...

Watching your kids gave me the final kick in the pants to finish my first Photostory video... I just posted it here and am looking for some help with how to raise the sound volume before I put it on my new blog and website. It's not very good, but it's also not all that bad for a first effort from a neophyte... I just kept thinking about your kids and got through it... Wished I had a team to work with.

I'm inspired by the creativity here... and the generosity of all the participants, too.

More soon...

Sorry for such a late reply Paul. Yes, I have been blessed in my video career. Having been laid-off from my corporate job in 1996 due to "re-structuring" (at the age of 50), I feel very lucky to have been involved in education for the past 10 years. The District is very open to our creative input. Usually some unit or departments will want to have a story told, or a project documented or training done and they approach the TV studio to come up with a way of telling that story and providing that video support. We have several venues to output our presentations: including the local cable educational channel, the District web site, individual DVDs for specific groups or even Teacher Tube and YouTube. Again, we are allowed a lot of creative latitude. The district relies on the experience and talent of the TV Studio personnel.

Feedback on feedback: Vid Snacks

Let me tell you just one of the values of the Vid Snacks community here on Ning. Not long ago I posted a blog, “The World is Watching”. My point was that students needed to understand what they were creating with video would be seen outside the school or the local community. As usual in the classroom setting, the explanation of TEAM received the usual head nods or stares, but when students actually began getting responses from the global community, immediately change occurred. I teach eleven yea… Continue
